ant’Omero owes its name to a bishop named Himerius, a man of great wisdom and virtue who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries and was, in all probability, born where the church of Santa Maria a Vico now stands.
Sant'Omero is the town’s patron saint and the important and popular Patronal Festival, held between June 1 and June 3, is celebrated in honour of his memory.
The religious festivities are accompanied by sporting events, shows and musical evenings, as well as an unmissable firework display that brings the most eagerly awaited religious festival of the year to it conclusion with a multi-coloured pyrotechnic extravaganza.
During Holy Week, Good Friday is marked by the traditional Procession of the Dead Christwhich is a re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross and something that has traditionally taken place in Sant'Omero, as it has in other towns and villages in Abruzzo, a region in which the Easter rites are still very much present and felt by the population. In the areas surrounding Sant’Omero and in the nearby towns and villages festivities to honour the saints are also organised at different times of the year. Between August 26 and September 5 the local tourist office and the associations operating in the area organise a packed programme of events for the Festival of Santa Maria a Vico, during which age-old rural traditions are revived and presented in the form of traditional games, food and wine stalls and religious celebrations with a solemn mass celebrated in the old church after which the festivities are named.
An authentic occasion that is very close to the heart of the inhabitants of Sant’Omero is the festival of the Albero di Maggio (Maypole). Every first of May a huge pole is erected in the town square as a symbol not only of International Workers’ Day but also as a symbolic reaffirmation of its own farming origins. Contact with nature is essential in an area with such a wealth of exceptionally beautiful views, where the countryside and gentle valleys provide a soil that is perfect for farming and producing outstanding products, such as the excellent olive oil and local wines.
